MODULO 6 The End of the Cold War After WWII Europe lost its central position in the international context, and the USA and the USSR emerged as the two superpowers. Despite their great political, economic and cultural differences, the two countries had fought against Nazism and Fascism together. However, when the war ended, tensions between the two countries quickly grew and gave rise to a period of hostile competition known as the Cold War. It lasted for more than four decades and between 1989 and 1991 it ended with the collapse of the Communist bloc.
